WELCOME!  I am teaching:

LGLA 2303.S01 Family Law: Fridays from 9:00AM - 11:50AM at SCC Room I-114

LGLA 1355.S01 Tort Law: Fridays from 1:00PM - 3:45PM at SCC Room I-114

HINTS FOR SUCCEEDING IN MY CLASSES.  (1) Do your reading, do your best to complete any reading notes that may be posted, and attend class.  A lot of what you will be expected to know for your testing and written assignments may come from lecture.  If you are not there, you will not know it.  (2) Do not fall behind. Get your assignments turned in on time. (3) You need  to access Blackboard each week.  It contains all of your materials and due dates and it is the way I send class announcements and emails. If you have trouble accessing Blackboard materials, contact the Help Desk and alert me immediately.

Updating information below- check back August 23rd!

Section names below should be active links to a draft version of the syllabus as of August 18, describing textbooks, calendar & course requirements.  This syllabus may be revised somewhat between August 18 and the start of classes, so please check back!

FAMILY LAW (LGLA 1355)  Fall 2014  - Fridays, 9:00 - 11:50 AM, SCC Room I-114

Family Law  - Section S01 (click the link to the right for a draft copy of this semester's syllabus)

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING regarding your text and regarding your reading assignment for the first class:

TEXT AND ONLINE RESOURCES:

1.    I am adopting an alternate text* for this semester, as follows:

Shoshana Ehrlich, Family Law for Paralegals (6th Ed), Aspen Publishers.  Click on  "Family Law - Section S01" link above to see the ISBN on the syllabus.

*The Ehrlich text was not ordered for the Collin bookstore.  You can attempt to find a second hand copy (and you may be able to get away with the 5th edition. It is not updated on alternative relationship law, but I will work with you).  You can also order it from several sources, including the Aspen Publishers website or Amazon,  and you can also rent it from several sources for about $44, I think.

2.     The Handbook of Family Law by Judge Koons is an excellent resource, however it is also very, very expensive, and it is not really a text in the traditional sense.  There are copies of the Handbook in the libraries. Several are 2009-2010 editions, but they are helpful nonetheless.

ASSIGNMENTS FOR YOUR FIRST CLASS - TO BE COMPLETED PRIOR TO CLASS ON FRIDAY, AUGUST 29th:

1.  Assignment 1 - WATCH two or three YouTube VIDEOS** (less than 10 minutes each) FOR:

a.  Class Overview; and
b.  Intro to Chap 1 & 2 (2 or more videos).

**The YouTube links should show up one at a time on the VIDEOS page on Blackboard once Blackboard becomes active the first day of classes (Aug. 25th).

2.  Assignment 2 -  READ CHAPTERS 1 and 2.

If I get the Chapter 1 and 2 Reading Notes posted by August 25th, I encourage you to try and complete those as you read.  READING NOTES will become available for download by Chapter on Blackboard from the "Reading Notes" page.

HEADS UP for Aug 29th:  Prof. Burkhart is teaching the other section of Family Law this semester, and she will be teaching your first class on Aug. 29th because I will be out of the country.  Please view my introductory videos so that I get to introduce myself to  you and so that you will know what my expectations are.
