English 1302                                       TEAM POEM PRESENTATIONS                          Fall 2006

Directions:  Pick a teammate and pick a poem to present in class.  You will need to:

(1) Give some background--briefly--about the poet to the class

(2) Incorporate two outside sources during your presentation, properly framed; i.e., “According to Dr. John Doe, a noted scholar on Emily Dickinson, . . . .”  The outside source cannot be our textbook.  This will require some outside research, but I want the bulk of the interpretation to come from you.

(3) Read the piece aloud to the class with feeling.  Both team members must read.  You can alternate stanzas or lines--your call.  Be creative in your reading approach.

(4) Explain any unfamiliar or unusual words.  Use your dictionary.  I will ask you their meanings.

(5) Respond to the piece (emotionally or intellectually or critically, etc).  This last point is the most important:  you can focus on a certain aspect or idea or image; you can offer opposing viewpoints-- again, your call. You will need to go through the poem stanza by stanza, but you do not have to go through line by line.  Take the approach that works best for your team.

Plan on approximately 12-15 minutes for your presentation.

You can sign up via e-mail or during class.  We will do our best to accommodate everyone.  Dates may vary depending on number of presenters.

I’ll grade your presentation on the 5 criteria, above.  Also, I expect a balanced approach; I don’t expect one person to talk most of the time.  This presentation is worth 6% of your grade.
