TO:             My Developmental Mathematics Students

Welcome to your Developmental Mathematics class.

In a speech at Rice University, in Houston, Texas, on 12 September 1962, President John F. Kennedy said:

  • "We choose to go to the moon. We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not only because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too."

  • In life there are many moons of success awaiting your arrival. The journey to these successes is often a long and rocky road with many twists, turns and obstacles. These difficulties are often overcome through great efforts and perseverance. The moon of mastery of developmental mathematics awaits your successful arrival.

I expect you to put forth great efforts and to persevere throughout this class, not because you may find some algebra concepts to be easy but because you may find some algebra concepts to be hard. I hope that you are willing to put forth your best energies and skills, and that you are a winner who is unwilling to postpone your success in developmental mathematics.

    Your Professor,

    James Weldon Mergerson
