Professor of Music, Collin College
Auditions for choral ensembles each semester will be held before Classes begin.
Choir Audition detailed info:
Auditions for Chamber Choir and Expressions jazz choir will be held on
Tuesday, August 16th following the orientation meeting and lunch for music majors, so usually around 12:30 in B180.
The A Capella Pop Group auditions are on Monday, August 15th at noon in B180.
The 3 groups I direct are open to both music majors and NON-music majors. Their meeting times and a brief description are:
Expressions vocal jazz 12-16 singers meets on MW 1-2:15 as well as some Fridays 1-2 to work with our combo.
We sing jazz standards as well as contemporary arrangements of all genres.
We sing on mics, no choreography, and all memorized. Music is provided.
A Capella Pop Group, aka OneSound pop group 6-8 singers/Beatboxer, meets on Tues/Thurs from 1-2:15
We mostly do a cappella covers of current hits.
We sing on mics, some movement but non like a show choir, and all memorized.
We arrange our own music as well. Mostly, we do not use printed music.
Chamber Choir 12-30 singers and meets Tues/Thurs from 11:30-12:45.
Most music is by well-known composers and arrangers.
Being able to follow your part in the music is necessary, but sight-reading is not a requirement.
All music will be memorized for performances.
There are usually 2 big concerts a semester.
For auditions, you need to prepare an a cappella solo that is appropriate for the style of group that you are auditioning for.
So pop for OneSound, jazz or blues for Expressions and classical for Chamber choir.
In addition to the solo, I will check your range and you will sightread a short exercise.
Nothing too difficult. It’s more for me so I know the group’s ability.
I might also have you sing a duet with me or another singer; sing a chromatic scale up and down.
This all takes about 5-7 minutes. There will be a form to complete upon your arrival, so be early.
For the pop group you will need to create your own harmony for 2 songs:
Mr. Blue Sky as performed on The Sing Off which you can listen to on Youtube and Song for Someone by U2 as they have released it.
You need to be a backup singer or an instrument type singer. Like Pitchperfect or Pentatonix if that helps.
